Today marks 16 years since the July 5, 2009 massacre in Urumqi, where peaceful Uyghur demonstrators were brutally suppressed by the People’s Republic of China. Hundreds were killed, thousands disappeared, and tens of thousands were arbitrarily detained. This date symbolizes the ongoing systematic policy of genocide against the Muslim Uyghur people in East Turkistan.
Current Situation:
• Millions detained in so-called “re-education” camps facing torture and forced assimilation.
• Systematic forced sterilizations and birth control targeting Uyghur women.
• Suppression of Uyghur language, religion, and culture; destruction of mosques.
• Forced separation of families and mass transfer of Uyghur children to state-run boarding schools.
• Forced labor transfer to factories in inner China.
Our Demands:
1. Immediate closure of all camps and an end to repression.
2. Unrestricted access for independent UN observers to East Turkistan.
3. Formal recognition of these acts as genocide by all states and at the UN.
4. Investigation by the International Criminal Court into crimes against humanity.
5. Action by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Organization of Turkic States to fulfill their responsibilities.
Silence in the face of oppression is complicity.
We call on the world to stand for justice and humanity.
Respectfully,
